About Us

The Writer's Co-op is a student-led organization based in Omaha, NE that supports young writing and community outreach. We are part of the student body of Westside High School, and we help young writers share their writing with other club members and the community through this website and our Quill and Inkstudent publication, Verbatim. Editors of the organization also help to edit prospective writing. The Writer's Co-op meets every Wednesday at 3:00 at the Bookworm, a book store in Countryside Village, directly across from Westside High School.

Our story began with an inquisitive student who asked her eighth grade teacher for the approval of a writer's club.  After deliberation, the teacher agreed. The club was small and not very serious; however, it gave the young students a chance to show off what they could do.

A year later, these young writers became freshmen. Fortunately, one of the seniors, the legendary Neal, started the Freshman Writer's Club. This was also not very serious, but the students wrote; and they learned from each other about how their work could be improved. Meetings were held at a member's house, and the writers simply enjoyed the creation of artwork. In addition, the club chose not to be school-sponsored, fearing that this would impose censorship upon the writing. This was not a draw-back, however–the leadership in the club that boosted it forward was tremendous.

The next year, the club publicized itself under the new name, "Writer's Co-op." This second-generation club expanded to include people other than the original freshmen, and the club experienced monumental success. Though the club expanded, membership was scarce at best. To further the cause of writing, the club took a bold initiative and started this website and Verbatim, both of which were met with monumental success.

Today, the club boasts more than 20 members and are planning to publish the 2nd issue of Verbatim during the 2010-2011 school year. How can you support us? Read our writing!
